A Power Distribution Unit (PDU) is a device that takes high amperage and voltage and breaks it down to smaller, more functional levels. The units generally have an electrical input and several outputs for providing power to multiple devices; they are perfect for applications where there is intensive usage of electricity.
Intelligent power distribution units are individually fused and by powering one from another, a single-point-of-failure is being initiated into the power continuity system. They can be remotely controlled over a network – even to perform a remote reboot -- and are therefore becoming more prominent among IT professionals.
Important web-based technological breakthroughs are being made in the development of these power distribution units.  For instance, a smart power strip has been introduced for server cabinets, making it possible to measure and report electricity usage accurately on each power circuit…a task which is not always accomplished easily.
The simple design of the power distribution units makes them easy to use and enables you to:
- Perform a remote reboot of your computer to minimize downtime;
- Identify and troubleshoot problems quickly;
- Monitor levels of power, humidity and temperature in the data center in real time.
Following are some of the types of power distribution units available:
- Switched Rack PDUs that you can power on, power off or cycle AC output to rectify problems with frozen servers or other network devices;
- Metered/Monitored Rack PDUs which continuously measure power consumption to ensure that usage never exceeds capacity;
- Hot-Swap PDUs which keep power flowing to critical equipment during repair or maintenance.
There are many things to consider when choosing a PDU, so only deal with trained professionals who can provide the guidance you need when exploring your options.
