A common data center mistake is overcooling IT equipment. While it is true that excess heat can shorten the life of IT equipment or even cause it to fail, excessive cooling does not prolong equipment life and is wasteful of energy. Temperature and humidity information delivered via console sensors help data center managers optimize their air conditioning and humidification settings and improve efficiency. More and more IT managers are turning to serial console servers to monitor this vital information and correct any issues.
To optimize your existing data center, consider the following.
1. If you are not monitoring and documenting conditions such as utility load, equipment intake temperatures, UPS load, redundant cooling capacity and power usage effectiveness via a serial console server, a check of your computer room airflow efficiency might be in order. Temperature sensing and environmental profiles are important when a data center is rearranged, which can lead to counterintuitive changes in temperature.
2. Depending on what a check of your data center reveals, a remedy might involve sealing up the openings in the perimeter walls, the raised floor and the cable openings under/behind cabinets and holes under PDUs.
3. Even if a data center appears to be out of power capacity, outlet-level monitoring via a serial console server may identify some simple rearrangements of IT equipment to balance power demands across racks. With PDU-level monitoring, it is easy to set thresholds so you know when you’re getting close to circuit limits.
4. After installing the recommended sealing technology, it’s critical to reexamine the heat load and all cooling unit settings to ensure you have taken advantage of all the efficiencies afforded by sealing openings that once permitted conditioned air to escape or hot exhaust air to circulate.
Driving energy consumption down means costs go down. Recommendations to improve the efficiency of your data center can be costly, but the money and time spent now will pay you back in significant energy savings down the road.
