A Con Server Explained

September 30, 2010

Some people give up after spending hours on the internet trying to find out what a con server is and never discover that it is another name for a console server. In order to fully understand what this server is, it is important to explain not only what it is but also what it does.

A con server provides access to a system console, the place where you can input commands and control your computer, through a network. The server can be either a piece of software or technology. Cables connect to a multitude of serial ports, usually 8, 16, or 48, and then connect to the serial ports on other computers, modems, servers, or anything else that can be used to pass along information and has a serial port. This is very useful for people who need to use a modem or access a network without being in the same room, because remote users are able to access anything that is connected by the server.

There are many brands and manufacturers of these kinds of servers and you will see them attempting to outdo one another in terms of technical specs, price, and marketing. Both big companies and industries often use these servers in their IT departments. This allows them to have data back up and system audits done at one location, rather than at every location where an office is located. Doing this saves a good deal of money.

Many of these servers can fit in a six-foot-tall rack because they are 1u. 1u is the smallest sized space on a rack and racks are used in order to have as much computer technology in as small a space as possible. The large metal racks have spaces where the servers are slid in and connected with power and data cables.

It is easy to see why there is so much competition where these servers are concerned. It is also easy to see the benefits of them -- they are easy to use, are cost efficient, and do not require a lot of space. If it sounds like a con server is right for you, it is time to see one in action.
