Out of band management allows and administrator the ability to gain access to a computer that is unresponsive; for instance if the computer is turned off, hibernating or asleep. Out of band management provides a necessary function for times that in band management may not be possible, such as when the operating system is no longer operational or present.

The serial console interface might become the only way to fix a problem when there is a network failure, misconfigurations or a need for troubleshooting. The console server was developed to provide a way for the administrator to access numerous serial devices from one central location.

Out of band management includes many different tasks. These tasks can include booting the computer using an operating system that is command-based in order to perform diagnostic applications, running commands, repairing utilities, restarting a computer that is no longer functioning and other essential tasks. These tasks can utilize remote technology in order to connect to the management controller for the computer.

However, some client management that is internet-based may not support all out of band management. There are still some options and features that are provided using Out of band management. The AMT provisioning can enable and configure computers that are AMT-based for this function.

There are times when out of band management can be more advantageous than the in-band management because there is no need for the network interface to be functional in order to manage the particular device. Also, there might be some network equipment which does not support the given management.
