Serial Switch Possibilities
September 17, 2010
Complicated computer networks that manage employees and customer information, collect and disseminate data, and run a business efficiently and effectively have been used for years by private enterprises and major commercial businesses. Many people wonder how such a network can be maintained especially with the thousands of remote computers some companies have. It takes effort to maintain a personal computer and much more so to maintain hundreds, especially if they are remote. A serial switch, also called a server switch or console server, is a simple hardware device that may have software with it that allows access to computers and other devices on a network even remotely.
While clients enjoy free customer service, businesses put in a lot of effort to provide it. Customer service departments are filled with employees who sit in front of a computer all day while on the phone, and who can access customer records using unique customer information. For some companies, the customer service center is a last as a football field with thousands of calls a day and hundreds of representatives answering them. Without a serial switch, a maintaining these kinds of networks would be impossible. IT experts could spend days just updating the computers but with a serial switch they can access sleeping computers to do any necessary work. This is called out of band management.
Computer problems should not take all day to fix. Computers have become necessities in many industries and nearly everything is computerized. Health records, customer data, tech support, and even payroll are all done with computers. A computer malfunction can cause lost productivity and without a serial switch, the IT professionals would need to access the computer from the end user’s location in order to diagnose and fix any problems. With this hardware the IT department is able to access machines from a distance to fix problems or update them, allowing employees to get back to work quickly.
The serial switch is the great piece of hardware that allows big companies to manage large networks. Machines connected to network as well as in band computers can be manipulated by the IT professionals
