Understanding the Serial Switch

The serial switch can is an advanced technical device which provides management for huge networks. The simplest switches can be used at home in order to share various serial devices among users. Complicated switches are used to allow IT managers the ability to remotely manage many serial devices from a single workstation.

A home user can use an inexpensive manual type switch. This simple A/B switch is easy to use and can provide the ability for two computers to share one serial device, or it can be used to connect several devices to a single computer. A serial cable running from each computer is connected to a port located on the switch. The device that is being shared then needs to be connected to the switches input/output port. This avoids the necessity of having to disconnect and reconnect a cable every time the device is shared. It allows each user to have easy access to a single shared resource. It also eliminates the need for installing a home network.

Another kind of serial switch is used in the workplace, such as for retail areas or in a factory. Computers can all be networked together and then connected with a server. Then a switch containing an Ethernet port could be located on the floor in the work area in order to provide access to shared devices such as time clocks and card readers.

An even more advanced kind of switch would be an auto-sensing serial switch that is capable of managing large numbers of devices at one time. This helps allow IT professionals the ability to control and monitor various devices, including servers regardless of operating system as well as routers and firewalls.

There are also other devices which are used to control the non-serial hardware. In order to share printers the parallel port switch can be installed. This can also be used to connect several printers to a single computer.

These switches can be purchased computer stores locally or over the internet. Switches can offer the ability to share any kind of device.
