Out of band management is commonly referred to as lights out management and it simply allows an administrator the ability to access the management controller of a computer when it has become unresponsive, such as when it is turned off or in hibernation mode. In contrast with in band management, a management controller is able to communicate with a management agent which runs along with the operating system on a computer which it is managing. The two functions are designed to work together because in band management might not be available if the operating system becomes unavailable. When this happens, out of band management is able to perform the remote management for the device.

Many tasks comprise out of band management, including scheduling deployments of software updates so that the various computers wake up before running, configuring advertisements, as well as reconfiguring BIOS settings, repairing utilities, running commands and diagnostic applications. Out of band management will also allow an administrator to restart a computer that is not functioning or the ability to boot it from a locally connected device. These tasks can also include powering computers off and on for any number of reasons.

If an administrator utilizes a device that has Active Management Technology, they will need to be sure that the management system will be compatible with this technology. Also, they might want to find a system which can provide alerts for any devices which might be experiencing issues with startup or that are powered down, common situations for machines during the off hours of a business.
