When the Lights Go Out Maintain Control With Out of Band Management

October 5, 2010

Many companies in todays faced paced global market are interested in the technology that can link their mutual interests all across the country and even the world into a single manageable network. Console switches, console servers and various other permutations of these words now enable these companies to be able to remotely repair or troubleshoot multiple computers all from one physical location. The tasks performed on a system such as this are called in band management while out of  band management would include tasks which are done when the computers are still connected to this network; however the network does not recognize them as being active.

If the computer and network both support the out of band management, there are numerous tasks which can be performed even when the computer is network unreachable, such as when it is turned off or perhaps the operating system is unavailable or not present. Out of band management will allow an administrator the ability to fix an operating system that has become unresponsive, perform maintenance, restart a computer that is malfunctioning, manipulate BIOS settings or even bypass supported BIOS passwords.

Productivity is essential in todays business and many easily remedied problems can have detrimental effects on large companies. Systems can become bogged down very quickly when hundreds of users suddenly start booting up their computers all across the network. The servers can become frozen or overloaded resulting in many hours of lost productivity. An IT professional utilizing out of band management can configure scheduled advertisements in order to wake these machines before their normal boot schedules. Productivity is increased and hardware wear and tear is reduced when a network is prepared properly for this heavy activity by the end user.
