Out Of Band Management Systems And Your Console Server.

November 25, 2010

When setting up an out of band management system, or LOM, to securely remote manage of your systems you will need to have an understanding of how these systems work and what products are needed to create an effective out of band management system.

The most popular LOM involves connecting the serial console port of each device in the network to a console server. The console server then allows remote access to hardware for each device on a secure channel so that the system will not be restricted should a system breakdown or malfunction occur. Since an out of LOM management system uses a secure individual channel to access any device connected to the console server, administrators can take care of network problems from another location. This can be done even there is a lost connection or if the device is turned off.

The most common type uses a LOM module and program along with a console server, but there are other options as well. One is using a Remote Access Card, or RAC. These cards can only be used in devices that are self supporting and have their own network connection. While they are extremely effective they can also be extremely expensive, especially for large corporations. This is due to the fact that each device would require an individual card.

LOM systems are fairly new to the IT world, but with new technology they are becoming more cost effective for big businesses looking to effectively manage their servers while lowering operational costs.
