Secure Console Server
A serial console server, otherwise known as a secure console server, are devices that allow IT technicians to gain access to a device within an LOM technology managed system. LOM systems are also referred to as out of band systems. They are the most effective system with regard to remote access. With advances in technology, many administrators are able to troubleshoot or repair systems through remote access. It is a method that is not only convenient, but cost effective.
In Band systems are different from LOM systems, as they use standard data channels to manage network devices. They are very affordable as well as easy to install, but they are somewhat limited if the router, server, or network is experiencing difficulties. One must weigh the cost against the convenience in this regard. For instance, if the system is turned off, the IT technicians cannot do anything to help from off-site.
Out of band management systems can solve these, and other network problems, by the use of a specific channel used only for remote access capabilities. The dedicated channel allows an off-site technician to access servers, routers, devices or networks in the even technical difficulties occur. Technicians can access the system even if the power is off.
Certain It departments use a separate remote access card for each individual device. Many of these cards are extremely effective, but also may be very costly. A person should conduct proper research when selecting a management system in order to be sure he or she will find the most appropriate and cost effective system available.
