Console management is one solution IT departments can consider if they want more control over their network. When it is implemented, servers and other devices can be accessed from virtually any location; one does not have to be at the office to control them. However, the nature of one’s control will depend on the type of management they are using. Out-of-band setups allow access during maintenance procedures, while in-band setups allow access when the system is running normally. Many companies are starting to prefer out-of-band systems because of their versatility, though it is important not to overlook the powers of in-band management.

Aside from the maintenance issue, in-band and out-of-band systems differ due to how they work. In-band systems use Ethernet connections, which is not as reliable. With Ethernet connections, there is only so much data a system can handle. Also, if something happens to the wiring, the management system may fail altogether.

Out-of-band systems avoid this issue by not relying on an Ethernet connection. Instead, it relies on a remote control. This remote can power each device regardless of where a person is. In addition, since the remote does not rely on a particular connection, it gives IT professionals more freedom in handling maintenance issues. If they feel a certain part of the network is malfunctioning, they can turn it off without having to reboot or rewire everything.

However, to create an out-of-band system, you must be willing to pay more money. In-band setups are not as expensive, making them a good solution for companies working with meager budgets. They can also be useful if your network is already reliable. It is no use paying hundreds more for an out-of-band system if your network rarely fails. So, while out-of-band setups still give you the most control, you must also consider the cost-effective nature of in-band systems.
