A console server allows users to access other computers remotely through networking. This function is made possible by using serial ports that are connected via the network to thither computers. All the equipment is attached to the console, giving the entire network control to a single device. This function is very useful for remote management, because the administrator has the ability to access any computer in the network without having to be there in real-life. These servers are only useful if they are combined with software that grants access to other devices. To prevent intruders and unauthorized users from gaining access, a code or password is installed that must be authenticated before granting access to the network or server.

Console servers can be set up using a variety of different configuration. Each company has their own unique needs, so the console can be set up to fulfill the needs of that company. Some consoles have 8 ports while others have up to 48 ports. The exact number should depend on the amount of computers or other devices that are going to be connected to the network. Each device will require one port, so small offices may only need eight ports to run all the computers.

Companies should always use strong security features when dealing with console servers. The access ability should only be limited to the administrator and managers of the company. If the console is intruded, it places the entire network at risk, so it is important to use strong passwords and other security precautions.
