Out of band management is a feature that makes a lot of things possible in computer networking. The earlier computers were considered as large calculators for use in crunching numbers. The advance in technology allowed two computers to be linked together. This allowed the computing power to be vastly increased. The information in computers is in the binary form and does not get degraded when it is sent from computer to computer. This allows computers to be linked together easily and encouraged the development of communication tools.

This brought in the idea of computer networking and a radical change in the way information was shared. The original computers were expensive and very big, and was therefore more in use by universities and governments. However the 1980s brought in a period that led to companies realizing that such linked networks had a lot of advantages, which then led to the further development of the technology. This led to the start of the internet, albeit in smaller versions which are now a part of history. This advance in communication has been one of the most dramatic developments in the field to date.

The development of out of band management is one of the tiny technologies that have benefited from such advances. There was a time when connecting computers remotely was considered a new technology. Data was transmitted without the use of any cables, but using the technology of the ethernet and modems. Console servers linked the various computers and other appliances of the network together and were a point of access for engineers for maintenance of the system.
