When an organization needs encrypted communication for their network a secure console server is necessary. The network can operate from a safe access point and using this technology unauthorized users are prevented from entering the network. The security levels will vary depending on the data that is transferred.

Some protocols are used to make the data unreadable for outsiders and this process is known as encryption. The protocol also decrypts the data so that authorized users will be able to read it. SSL or Secure Sockets Layer is one of the most widely used protocol. It uses two seperate encryptions, one is known by all the users and the other is known only by those who are receiving the message.

Some times the administrator can employ S-HTTP along with SSL on the network for sending encrypted messages. Ipsec protocol is used by many Virtual Private Networks. It can be a success only if both the sender and receiver of the data have Ipsec. It is used by military and goverment agencies for transferring sensitive information.

A console server has more storage capability and runs on a different software platform even though it looks like a PC tower. For added security they are usually locked away in a room. For small business or home network the server can also be just a single PC.

A secure console server is the central point of all network operations. This vital equipment will make sure that the data is unreadable to outsiders no matter what type of information or amount of sensitivity that is required.
