When an individual or company requires multiple computer systems focusing on the same task, a way to reduce the overhead costs of these multiple terminals is to use a piece of hardware called a terminal switch. A switch of this nature will allow the user to control many computer systems with one mouse, keyboard, and monitor.

Some of the many reasons why a company would use multiple computer terminals would be to render frames for animated films, server farms for gaming, or web hosting services that need consistent uptime. Each computer can then be controlled by one keyboard, mouse, and monitor by switching to it, either manually or through software means, with terminal switches. If, for example, a company has 100 different computer systems focusing on a task, instead of requiring each one of these to have a mouse, keyboard, and monitor attached to it, a single set could be used for all 100, dramatically reducing the costs to purchase this excess hardware.

An advantage to using a system that is set up in this way, aside from the financial benefits, is that it allows for redundancy within the system, increasing overall reliability. If one of the computers within the system should happen to be faulty or become damaged, focus could be switched away from it while it is repaired or replaced. There are ways for the switch to happen automatically so that downtime would be negligible.

Using a terminal switch offers a cost effective way to increase overall reliability and processing power, without sacrificing any functionality.
